A Day at the Farmers Market

One the way to the Farmer's Market, we met these absolutely adorable Pit Bulls but we can't remember their names, but we know they live in the house with the red door on park street.

The lady with the dog was friendly with her upstairs neighbor (pictured above).

Every Saturday they walk to the market and get a bunch of good food. the dogs like people.

The Farmers Market

We met a friendly volunteer while at the Market (he's very helpful towards the market).

This is Johnny who plays a very huge role in the "Little Green Wagon Project", he waters the plants throughout the week to make sure they are healthy. Johnny was happy because his little brother Billy was at the market that day!!!

Interview with Farmer Joe, part I

Today we met a farmer named Farmer Joe, he's been farming more than 50 years. He started at age 5. His most popular and best selling crops are peas, grapes, okra, roasted pecans. He also has a special song and it goes "doo-doo-da-doo-doot," he sings it when he makes a sale.

and we think his butter beans are too, but we didn't eat any.

OKRA! We learned that inside each pod is enough seeds to grow enough okra to feed a neighborhood. You have to let the seeds dry and then you can plant them.

The honey looked very good so we asked for a lil sample and we got one. Then we tasted it and it tasted great and we got to taste the honeycomb with it and didn't taste as good as the honey
FUN FACT: YOU CANT GET DIABETES FROM HONEY.

At Brighter Day & The Sentient Bean

This (above) is Janie. She is the owener at Brighter Day. She has been the owner for at least 30 years. She started the store with her husband Peter.

Then we went to the bean and saw some friends...

We also got some food, it was amazing. Renise thought she didn't like tomatoes but then she ate a whole bunch of Salsa and loved it. Later, she found out it was made from tomatoes!

We met these people at first I thought he was a girl but it's a boy. They name was Michelle and Oliver Solomon. They were very friendly and vegetarians. We talked about how Miss Molly used to babysit Oliver and she was a good helper. They shared their left over oatmeal chocolate chip cookie with us and then we got some quesidillas and sandwiches.

Down: yummy food at the bean. Almost all of their food is made from fresh food that grown around here.

The we ran into Mr. Lester Sloan again and he let us take pictures with his camera. Lester Sloan is the photography teacher at Savannah State. He has taken pictures all over the world.

We met Tina Brown who is an author. She was excited to meet us because she also likes to take pictures of people and tell their story. She was at the Bean to have lunch with Mr. Lester. She gave us her book that was about a woman who had AIDS and how she was strong even though things were pretty terrible a lot of the time for her. Jaala is reading the book, so we will put more information when she is done.

This is Mrs.Suzen a nice and grateful lady, she is a volunteer at the y with Miss Molly. She is also a writer and a photographer. she works with the kids in DEEP, a kids writing workshop. She is not a farmer, but she is a gardener.

Our First Day of Exploring!

The First Day:

First we greeted each other and made maps of where we live and places that we go.

then we left the Y we first walked thru Frazier Homes and saw some kids that we know.

 and we saw churches on Park Street; Tremont Temple Baptist Chruch and St. Phillips Monumental AME Church.

After the Churches we went to the park. We got there as they were closing the Farmers Market. We met Mr.Lester who teaches photography at Savannah State.

Mr. Christopher who is a 7th & 8th grade science teacher at Charles Ellis.

 We met Teri (above!) and Kelly (below!) who help run the market. Ms. Teri and Mr. Christopher are married. 

We met  Mr.Johnny, who works at the market and takes care of the little green wagon.

The little green wagon is a program for little kids that come every Saturday to plant veggies. The can come back the next Saturday to pick them up and plant them in their own yard.

Then we noticed that there were people dressed up in costumes & fighting with swords in the park. So we went to see who they were.

They were very hot and tired when they finished fighting because the costume was heavy.

 Then we met Ember (below!) who told us about the people fighting in the park. We got to hold the swords. Ty'rik got to hit Lindsey with the sword. (the brothers....)

And then we met Becky (above & below)  who was a relative with the people fighting in the park. And she was a great drawer who drew realistic pictures. She was happy to meet us because she likes hanging out with people more than fighting. It sounded like she had a lot of friends.

Next we went to Brighter Day for a Snack.

                                            We met Steven who is a cashier at Brighter Day.

And a woman named Laura who has a really nice huge dog who was good at obeying orders. 

Later: Renise and Ms.Molly ran down to the Telfair Museum of Art because there was a show hanging up by some of the kids that Ms. Molly did art with in the summer time. The show was about Savannah and people's favorite places.

 I (Renise) met Erica,  she works at the Education Center for the Museum. We also met Cara and Warren Raisch, they own a art website. They have two girls,katy,and skyleigh and they are really nice.
